Fall 2024 Design Ideas: Color, Texture, and Lighting

Start with color

Terracotta, olive, and muted gold can bring a warmer note to a room. Try a smaller item, such as a cushion or artwork, before committing to a large painted surface.

Look at a sample in the room’s daytime and evening light. A color that works in a photograph may feel different beside your flooring or cabinets.

Add texture where it helps

Wood tones and textured fabrics can add interest without filling every surface. Consider how a new piece relates to the furniture you already use.

For permanent changes to cabinetry, walls, or fixtures, check materials, installation requirements, and any applicable approvals before starting.

Make a reading corner usable

Place a chair where there is enough room to move around it, then add light where you need it for reading. A small table for a book or cup may be more useful than another decorative object.

Layering a task lamp with existing room lighting gives you options for different activities.
