Choosing Lower-Maintenance Plants for a Texas Yard

Lower maintenance starts with matching the plant to the place. Sun, drainage, soil, mature size, and your watering routine matter more than a general list of plants described as suitable for all of Texas.
Read the yard before choosing plants
Notice which areas receive morning light, strong afternoon sun, or shade. Check where water collects after rain and measure the space available when a plant is fully grown.
Newly planted landscaping still needs establishment care. A drought-tolerant plant is not automatically ready to go without watering as soon as it is planted.
Consider a few different plant types
The original version of this article suggested Texas sage, lantana, agave, yucca, ornamental grasses, esperanza, salvia, rosemary, black-eyed Susan, and red yucca. Treat these as starting points for a conversation with a local nursery, not a universal shopping list.
Ask about the exact species or cultivar. Plants sharing a common name may differ in size, cold tolerance, growth habit, or suitability for the drainage on your lot. Spiny plants also need enough distance from paths and play areas.

Design for the care you want to do
Group plants with similar watering needs. Leave room for mature growth so shrubs do not require constant trimming to fit beside windows or paths. Before planting trees or changing drainage, confirm any community requirements and the location of underground utilities.
